This Chocolate Coffee Smoothie was originally posted on May 17, 2013 but was updated on January 24, 2016. I felt like the recipe needed some love and someย fresh photos. I also needed a reminder to put this back into my smoothie rotation.ย Yum!

Back when I was in middle school Starbucks didn’t really exist. I remember a few of my friends working there a couple of years later in high school but there definitely weren’t coffee shops on every corner like there are now. And I’m about 99% sure that I didn’t even know what a latte was until I was about 18. What I did know was what a cappuccino was, an ice cream milk shake from Baskin Robbins of course. Alright, my version of a cappuccino then. See my first foray into coffee was in the form of the Cappuccino Blast.

There was a Baskin Robbins about a half mile from my house. Every so often in the afternoons, my friend Maureen and I would walk or bike over there and share a Cappuccino Blast. It was icy, full of coffee flavoring (not sure it actually had any real coffee in it) and topped with whipped cream and cinnamon. I probably haven’t had one in 20 years but this morning as I was scooting home from teaching my morning class I started dreaming about one. (As a side note, isn’t it weird how the mind transports you to a time you haven’t thought about it forever without notice? So strange).

When I got home I went about creating my own version now termed the Chocolate Coffee Smoothie. I’m so creative! It’s more chocolate-y then I remember and probably has about 750 fewer calories but that’s okay because it can now be eaten for breakfast. If you’re so inclined top it with coconut milk whipped cream to complete the experience. I didn’t have any coconut milk but I imagine it would be delicious.

  • 1 frozen banana
  • ½ cup frozen mango
  • ½ cup cold coffee
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • Handful of ice cubes
  • sprinkle of cinnamon
Instructions
  1. Place banana, mango, coffee, cocoa powder, ice cubes and cinnamon in a blender.
  2. Blend until thick.
  3. Note: I don't usually use ice in my smoothies but to mock the original cappuccino blast I included them here. Feel free to omit.

    I am not really a coffee-drinker, but I think I could handle this. ๐Ÿ™‚

I didn’t use much coffee. The taste is there but not overwhelming, perfect for those who just want the flavor ๐Ÿ™‚

Yesterday I was randomly craving a chocolate frosty from Wendy’s, and I whipped up something very similar (minus the coffee). Seriously — how magical is a frozen banana?! I’ll have to try adding some coffee next time. Looks good!

I buy big bunches of bananas every time I’m at the store and they go directly into my freezer, I use so many of them!
