How To: Homemade Pumpkin Puree

November 4, 2013

Oftentimes I avoid sharing recipes with you because I think they might be too simple. But the more I think about it the sillier this seems. This is a food blog, you’re looking for recipes and information about food. Why wouldn’t I share? Seems kind of mean not to, :). This isn’t even a recipe but more of a how to, a how to on homemade pumpkin puree.

Yesterday I looked out on three pumpkins sitting on the front porch. I bought two small sugar pumpkins early in the month and then Michael bought a big Jack ‘O Lantern style pumpkin a week ago. My intent was always to use the sugar pumpkins for baking after the holiday so I didn’t carve those pumpkins. We also ran out of time and didn’t carve the Jack ‘o Lantern so there will be a lot of pumpkin happening around here over the next few weeks.

I’m not sure if this recipe works with larger pumpkins. Has anyone done this in the past? But a small sugar pumpkin yields about a can’s worth of pumpkin puree.

Honestly, the process is a bit laborious and I’ll likely keep buying canned pumpkin puree but if you have leftover pumpkins sitting around from Halloween, why not?
