Strawberry smoothies are the grandfather of all smoothies. The pillar upon which all other smoothies stand. With smoothies that include everything from protein powders and chia seeds to nut butters and coconut shreds, it’s easy to overlook the humble strawberry and banana combo. But today I’m here to share how to make an even more delicious strawberry smoothie with just one simple, easy ingredient. Ready for it?
But not just any lemon juice, Meyer lemon juice.
If you aren’t familiar with Meyer lemons read this article from The Kitchn. They’ll tell you everything you need to know, but in short, Meyer lemons tend to be smaller with thinner skin. They are usually more herbaceous in smell and sweeter in taste. They may be a bit harder to find but I have the great advantage of living close to my mom again and she happens to have a Meyer Lemon tree in her front yard that seems to know no season (maybe that’s just California).
With, strawberry season upon us and the farmers market stands brimming with fresh, juicy, sweet, in season strawberries I knew it was time to reintroduce the simple strawberry banana smoothie into rotation. The Meyer Lemon juice brings out the flavor and sweetness of the fruit and add a tiny punch of acidity that pairs well with the creaminess of the milk.
So if you find yourself with fresh strawberries on hand and are wondering how to make an even more delicious strawberry smoothie, try a squeeze of lemon!
- 1 frozen banana
- 1 cup strawberries
- ¾ cup milk of choice
- 1-2 tablespoons Meyer lemon juice
- Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.
- Enjoy immediately.
