Reset Your Wellness: 5 Simple Tips You Can Start Today

Sometimes wellness can get a little out of whack. Long weekends, holidays, trips, stress, laziness, craziness, kids. When one or all of the above occurs it’s easy to reach for less than healthy foods and to let workouts slide. So, if you’re feeling a little worse for wear after a summer of too many glasses of rosé, a few too many smores or more evenings on the back deck than in the yoga studio, below are my favorite 5 ways to reset your wellness today.

Let It Go

Guilt can be a great motivator but also a terrible one. Instead of beating yourself up about where you’ve been, begin to look forward. Wherever you’re at on your wellness journey, be there. Don’t get bogged down in past, the present is the only place you have control over.

Start Today

It’s really easy to be looking exercise or a meal choice in the face and say, I’ll start tomorrow. It’s a pattern that’s really hard to break. If you keep pushing your wellness out, you’ll never begin. Instead of starting your journey tomorrow or Monday or on the first of the month, I say, start now! What’s the next meal in front of you? When is the next time you have 15 free minutes? Take advantage by creating a healthy habit right now.

Retrain Your Taste Buds

We talked about this in one of my last posts but sugar can be a crazy beast. It’s pull is fierce and it can create a massive hangover. Awareness is the first step. If you struggle with sugar, start by cutting it out of one drink or meal and see how you feel. I’m not talking anything crazy, just omit the sugar from your coffee for a day or instead of having lunch dessert (yes, that’s a thing in my world) skip one day. I promise, the less you eat, the less you need, the better you feel.

Sit Still

I know it seems totally counterintuitive to reset your wellness by doing nothing, but a little stillness might be just what you need to find clarity and get going again. Try this. Find 5 minutes, preferably first or last thing in your day, to be quiet and still. You don’t need a fancy mediation cushion, you don’t even need to be able to sit cross legged. Just find a chair in a quiet part of your house, close your eyes and observe your breath. If you find your mind wandering, simply come back to the breath. Don’t judge your mind for drifting, just let the thought go and continue to breathe. Set your phone timer and simply allow yourself to be.

Drink More Water

This is by far the easiest way to jumpstart your wellness. Here are a few of the tricks I have for sneaking in more water. Before I eat or drink anything in the morning I have a big glass of water. I don’t let myself even touch my morning coffee or tea unless I’ve had a glass, maybe two. When I’m done with breakfast I fill up my water bottle and I make it a goal to drink the whole thing by lunch. At lunch I fill it up again and I drink it with and after lunch. Then I fill it up again and make sure I drink another one before dinner. And with dinner I usually have a glass or two of sparkling water. Lastly, I put a glass by my bed in case I wake up in the middle of the night wanting a quick swig.

Water helps with bloating, headaches, fatigue and makes your skin look better and let’s face it, when you look better you feel better.

I think the key is to quite literally just start and start small.

    I was literally just thinking about how to amp up my immune system for Fall as well! I love your tips to drink more water and refrain your tastebuds since I struggle with multiple snack desserts daily and seriously need to stop!
